Jennifer Phelps
I was born and raised in San Diego. Both my parents were scientists, so I was infused with a love of learning and curiosity. My family went on extended road trips across the country in our trusty station wagon, visiting National Parks, hiking, backpacking, camping, and appreciating wildlife. I grew up loving a night sky full of stars and the quiet peace and awe-inspiring beauty of nature.
In 1999, I graduated from UCSD with a major in Visual Art and began employment at UCSD while pursuing my artistic interests. Eventually, I decided to follow my passion to become an art therapist. I went back to school, earning a Mental Health Aid / Advocate Certificate before completing a Master’s in Clinical Art Therapy from Loyola Marymount University.
I’m excited to use my creativity, mindfulness, and compassion to help individuals and families work through anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship and identity needs. I also have extensive experience working with clients experiencing schizophrenia and addiction, along with the families who support them. I regularly use Art Therapy, Family-Systems, Dialectical Behavioral, and Person-Centered approaches in therapy.
I love working with folks who might not know their own potential, who are finding their identity, who have never been in therapy, or who don’t want to be in therapy. I use my sense of humor and down-to-earth attitude to help create a welcoming therapeutic space.
Outside of the office, I enjoy spending time with my family, snuggling with our three cats, and taking our dog to the dog park. When I have time, I enjoy making art, singing along to my favorite music, and watching dramas.
